It is also the story of how I met and fell in love with my wife, Kathy.

Ain't Wastin' Time expresses some of the emotions we experience as a relationship starts to grow into what somehow always feels like "the one we've been waiting for all our life". As if everything that happened before that point in our life was just preparing us for this time...
It's a nice feeling whether it is accurate or not. It's that feeling that keeps us coming back for more.

I've heard it said that, to be able to truly love someone else, one must first be able to love and accept oneself.
Sometimes we meet someone who apparently can't seem to find anything good to say about themself or what goes on in their life.
For reasons that aren't obvious to anyone else, these people constantly point out their own flaws and failures. "Debbie Downers" are always using social media posts as a platform to tell the world how unfortunate they are and how unfair life has been to them. I find this very sad...
This song is for someone I know who does those things. I wrote it in the hope that she might listen to it and like it ... and then maybe cut herself a little slack.

Sometimes we’re lucky enough, or maybe it's unlucky enough that we meet someone who makes us feel so good when we’re with them that, even though it's obvious that they are only using us ... we just don't care.
A romance like that can be such a great ride that, while everyone tells you that you're headed for disaster, you don't mind ignoring them. You just want to enjoy it while it lasts... even if you end up needing therapy afterwards.

The original tracks for this song were written and recorded by my nephew, Drew Duncan. He sent me the demo that he had developed, and told me he wasn't inspired to write lyrics for it.
It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to say with it because the musical style was so different from my own. The end result was this recording. Drew and I are working on more songs together that will be released later this year.

The story is that of an up and coming performer whose success on the road is adversely impacting his relationship with the girl back home. He comes to realize that all her encouragements and promises of love that were given before his career took off are beginning to show their true colors.
He begins to see that she never truly believed in him. That she was giving him all the rope he needed to hang himself. She always assumed that someday he would give up his dream and "grow up”. Then she would be able to mold him into the man that she wanted him to be all along.

track 7: Finish Loving You
Long ago, when I was a young man, I wrote a Jazz ballad. The story was written from a woman's viewpoint about a guy... a real jerk... who claimed to love her, but kept hurting her and then pulling her back in . He did care for her but he was unable to resist running back to the arms of his needy, and neurotic old girlfriend.
Sadly, I didn't make this stuff up... that jerk was me, and so I wrote the song and gave it to her to try to make amends.
I never had any luck finding a female Jazz singer who wanted to record it, so it hung around for years gathering dust on my hard drive until 2018 when I correctly concluded that it never was a very good Jazz ballad anyway.
But it was important for me to do something with it, so I chose a more accessible style, re-wrote the music and sang it myself.

This song deals with the dreaded "Downhill Slide" in full swing. The point where you begin to realize that everything you thought you knew for sure, has turned out to be wrong.
Unfortunately for me, the one thing about this song that is NOT autobiographical is, that there has never been a time in my life when I have gone for a run every morning.

I wrote this song in 2019, but in it I talk about a relationship that I was in a very long time ago. I was young and had no direction in life at the time, so I allowed myself to be led around by someone I thought was better than me and worth the trouble. She dumped me more than once and always changed her mind and took me back… I am forever grateful for the fact that, in the end, it was me who finally walked away and never looked back.
